Pingbirds are telerobotic birds that send ping commands to servers geographically located in the Amazon region (where the rainforest is located). The pingbirds sing the songs of real Amazonian birds according the rhythm of global network traffic. The ping command operates by sending a packet to a designated address and waiting for a response. It is used to monitor round-trip travel time and as such is a direct measurement of current Internet traffic. In the interactive telepresence installation "Uirapuru," greater Internet traffic results in the telerobotic birds singing more often.

The two lists below exemplify the trajectory of 64-byte ping packets sent by the pingbirds in Tokyo to the server in the Amazon region, and then returned by the server to the pingbirds. Time is indicated in milliseconds (ms).

If we compare the two lists we see great variation: the number of hops is different (18 and 15, respectively), the trajectory of the ping packets is not the same (one goes through Montreal, the other through Baltimore), and the round-trip travel time varies accordingly. All parameters change constantly, giving great variety to the pingbirds' behavior.
