The possibility to 'write' informations in living beings is one of the characteristics of transgenic art, an art form which Eduardo Kac (see the interview on Neural n.20) helped create. Vilém, in 1988, already spoke about 'ars vivendi', art which could preserve itself by passing through the generations of the organisms containing it. The critical essays contained in this book explore the approach of this artist, one of the few able to challenge the patent rush of biotech multinationals. Kac's work is based on an open view of biotechnology, and explicitly urges the different categories involved to debate and rediscuss the role of DNA with relation to biological functions, emphasizing instead the ethical, social and historical aspects of technology applied to organic matter. The book takes its name from one of the most famous works of Kac (The Eighth Day), and is continuously pervaded by it. Il poter 'scrivere' informazioni negli esseri viventi è una delle prerogative dell'arte transegenica, di cui Eduardo Kac (vedi intervista su Neural n.20) è indubbiamente uno dei fondatori. Fin dalle profetiche visioni di Vilém Flusser che nel 1988 già parlava di 'ars vivendi' capace di tramandare l'opera in organismi biologici modificati attraverso diverse generazioni, si apre uno squarcio, qui esplorato teoricamente dai diversi scritti critici, che analizzano l'approccio dell'artista, fra i pochi a far riflettere sulla corsa ai brevetti delle forme viventi attuata dalle multinazionali biotech. L'opera di Kac si fonda su una concezione aperta delle biotecnologia, invitando esplicitamente al dibattito fra le diverse categorie coinvolte e a rimettere drasticamente in discussione il ruolo del DNA nella composizione delle funzioni biologiche, enfatizzando invece gli aspetti etici, sociali e storici della tecnologia applicata all'organico.
